Studying in America is a completely different experience to studying in the UK. So is the process.
Every year over 5,000 British students gain entry into American universities. From the laid back beaches of California to the hustle and bustle of New York City, increasing numbers of students from the UK are realising opportunities across the Atlantic.
Studying in the US offers a very different experience in the classroom. Many colleges offer a Liberal Arts programme, encouraging students to explore a wide array of subjects outside their elected major: from “The Art of Chocolate,” to “Ancient Chinese Philosophy,” to “Intimate Relations.” Designed to broaden students’ horizons, majors are flexible in nature, allowing students to select their own modules and opportunities, tailoring their degree to their own preferences. A course of study is declared in second year, enabling students to take more time to consider their course and take advantage of the vast course catalogues. American classrooms and lecture theatres are typically more interactive and inclusive than those in the UK, facilitating an active learning process. Each class is letter-graded (A – E), and is incorporated into a grade point average, or GPA score; a cumulative average of every class taken at university. GPAs range from 0 (all Es) to 4.0 (all As). For reference, a UK 1:1 corresponds to approximately a 3.65 GPA, and a 2:1 to a 3.3 GPA.
GCSE results are an important component of the application, as they are frequently the most recent official grades an applying student will have. Predicted A-Level grades supported by comprehensive teacher references will also contribute to the academic strength of an application. But it is a well-rounded individual who will fit best in an American campus community, offering insight and experience in both their academics and extracurricular activities. Think about what you could bring to a discussion with your peers at the dinner table!
